Not to Worry, the Next-Gen Ford Mustang isn’t Going Anywhere
If you’re a long-time Ford fan, you may have heard that the next-generation Ford Mustang is slated to be bigger, badder, and more powerful than ever before. You may also have heard that the Ford Motor Company has recently decided to shift it’s manufacturing focus almost entirely to trucks and SUVs moving forward.
While there is truth to that statement, rest assured that you won’t have to worry about the disappearance of the long-running Ford Mustang. A recent report by Automotive News claims that the next-generation of this iconic pony car is staying put all the way through 2030.
Codenamed the S650, the seventh-generation of the Mustang is scheduled to hit dealer showrooms in 2022. The all-new vehicle is expected to sell incredibly well, just as recent model years of the Mustang have.
For that reason, Ford has reportedly informed its suppliers that the next-gen Mustang will remain in production for eight years, a two-year increase over the existing six-year structure between generations.
Additional developments to the Mustang’s heritage, such as the upcoming all-electric 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, would seem to indicate that the Blue Oval brand has no intention of abandoning one its most famous models even beyond the lifespan of the seventh-gen.
That said, to make the sparing of the Mustang worthwhile, suppliers will have to maintain an intense manufacturing capacity of nearly 10,000 units per year, totalling 77,000 coupes and 20,000 convertibles.
One challenge suppliers will face is a redesign of automotive architecture, as the next-gen Mustang is anticipated to feature the same advanced rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems that are currently in production on the latest Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models.
Additionally, dealerships nationwide will have to get to work on selling off a healthy portion of their Mustang inventory, though Ford doesn’t expect this to be a problem since the famous muscle car remains an absolute fan favorite.
The Ford Mustang is undeniably American. For decades, the beloved performance car has truly shaped the tastes and desires of automotive connoisseurs nationwide. For this reason, Ford has every intention of keeping the Mustang in the limelight for years to come.
