January 25th, 2024 by

Introducing the F-150 Lightning Switchgear! This highly advanced and experimental truck has just debuted its demonstrator version. The Switchgear takes the capability and off-road prowess that the F-150 Lightning is able to provide to a whole new level. Named for its combined off-road and on-road abilities, this Ford Performance demonstration vehicle features 37-inch tires, an all-electric drivetrain, a carbon fiber exterior, and much more.

Ford Performance developed the F-150 Lightning Switchgear demonstrator in cooperation with RTR vehicles. Designed with influence from the 2016 F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear was created with extensive off-roading upgrades to allow it to venture into remote areas and traverse difficult terrain.

The F-150 Lightning Switchgear is a part of the Ford Performance Demonstrator program, which also includes the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, the Mustang CobraJet 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator. For Ford’s engineering and design teams, these cars are the ultimate playground to expand the boundaries of what they can accomplish and to broaden the possibilities for the electric vehicles of the future. Vehicles like the Switchgear are outstanding examples of what an electric vehicle can really do.

The F-150 Lightning Switchgear differs from the Lightning’s standard model in several key ways. Its wider track improves off-road stability, and it has increased ground clearance and suspension travel. The suspension system of the F-150 Lightning Switchgear comprises FOX 3-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers coupled with unique front and rear bumpers to increase the truck’s approach and departure angles. The Switchgear also features a unique independent double-wishbone suspension up front and multilink independent suspension at the back with coil-over shocks, a stabilizer bar, and custom control arms.

Ready for even the roughest off-road terrain, this truck features carbon composite front fenders, bed sides, and a rear bumper cover, plus steel-fabricated rock rails and a front skid plate. The vehicle is designed with limit straps in order to control suspension and wheel travel, NITTO Ridge Grappler 37×12.5R18 tires, and a pursuit rack that can accommodate two spare wheels or tires.

The public will be able to see the live debut of the F-150 Lightning Switchgear during the prestigious off-road racing championship King of the Hammers, which starts on January 25 in Johnson Valley, California.
