Ford’s All-New PowerBoost Full Hybrid Engine is Torture-Tested, Built Ford Tough

By now, the automotive world is above with the news; Ford’s all-new 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid engine has shattered the mold in terms of power, performance, and capability.
 

Available in the upcoming 2021 Ford F-150, this is the only ful hybrid powertrain that is currently available in a pickup. Delivering 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, this engine is designed to deliver years of dependable, hardworking service without breaking a sweat.
 

“Just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t mean we treated PowerBoost with kid gloves,” said Craig Schmatz, F-150 chief engineer. “To earn Built Ford Tough certification, PowerBoost went through the torture testing we put all of our powertrains through. No F-150 powertrain gets a pass, we have one standard for quality and durability.”
 

Ford’s torture tests include towing fully loaded trailers over desert dunes in 100+ degree weather, withstanding frozen tundras, and enduring high-humidity chambers, salt baths, and roads built specifically to bring a truck to its wheel bearings. 
 

Ford engineers even added a new durability test to truly push the limits of the all new full hybrid PowerBoost. For this test, Ford built a custom machine that uses multi-axis hydraulic actuation to violently shake this engine’s 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery with harsh potholes and washboard road surfaces.
 

Jack Parnoutsoukian, Ford’s high-voltage application engineer, described this chamber as “a mechanical bull on steroids.” The PowerBoost came out on top each time it drove inside.
 

In addition, the PowerBoost engine was tested at the Ford Michigan proving grounds on road surfaces deemed too punishing for human test drivers. Instead, Ford programmed robots to drive the PowerBoost-equipped 2021 Ford F-150 over a continuous series of man-made pitted and grooved roads while it was fully loaded with a payload of 2,120 pounds. The PowerBoost successfully ran the course hundreds of times.
